Tile engine videos on YouTube!
That’s right! Now that YouTube supports a nice high definition option that lets you actually read text, I went ahead and cut up all of the tile engine videos into segments less than 10 minutes (YouTube’s length limit which is oddly short considering their size limit is 2GB per video…) and put them all up on YouTube. No more needing to download half a gig files for each episode; just watch them on YouTube at your convenience.
The naming scheme on YouTube is a little awkward, but I wanted to keep it easy to relate to the downloadable videos. So you’ll find, for example, “Tile Engine Tutorial Episode 11D, Part 1 / 3″ so you know that it’s part 1/3 of the 11D video you can download from here. Might be a little confusing at first, but in case I reference the names in any videos it should help.
I’ve also made a playlist for the videos to group them all. In addition, I’ve also embedded the whole playlist below. You can also embed any of these videos or the playlist on your site. See the playlist page for the code to do that if you want.
Edit: I just noticed that embedded playlists are apparently capped at 50 videos. Sorry, you’ll just have to use the playlist page to see them all.

Excellent!
Always a fan of the TileEngine series. I occasionally watch through the videos when I need a refresher course (such as after being away from XNA for a year).
Related question that I’ve been meaning to email: Do you still have the videos of Dialogue expansion? I recall that it tweaked the system to handle more like a JRPG and used the first chapter of Moby Dick and filler text.

This is awesome! I was just thinking about these! I’m actually starting a lil side-scroller in 3D, but I’m gonna build the background out of tiled meshes/blocks and wanted to use your system as a jump-off. Thanks man.
Thank you Nick for all this!
I just have low quality sound on the last episode of the videos (number 14) on all the 5 parts.
Except this, I’m always pleased to read about your work, keep it up man!
Hi Nick. Thanks for those youtube posts. It’s been such a great help as I’m learning XNA to hear a quick word or two on the code as it’s written. Sometimes just reading a sample isn’t enough. Those quick rundowns help it ‘click’ .
My question is, how hard is it to change from a 4 sided tile to a hexagon tile? Will it be hard to adapt what I’ve learnt from your tutorials? Due to the nature of the beast/tile shape there will be offsets and all sorts.
Apologies if you’ve mentioned it in later posts, I’m only up to 4A at the moment.
Thanks
Neil
