I made a Flash game!

January 10th, 2010 | 0 comments

A while back I spotted Flixel, a Flash/Flex library for game development, which sounded like a fun side project. I wanted to try and get into making little web games, but I didn’t really play with it much and it fell by the wayside. Today I saw a new Flex library called FlashPunk was released and I decided to give it a go. It went really well and was quite fun to build with. The author had a very basic getting started tutorial of getting one sprite on the screen. I then used the rest of the content the tutorial gave and built this very basic shooter type game in a matter of hours:

(Click to give focus. Use Left/Right to move and Space to shoot.)

I’m impressed with how nice ActionScript 3 really is. I’ve never really used the language and am just winging it as I go. It has some things I don’t like, but that’s probably just because I think that C# is about the best language I’ve used.

I’m definitely excited to keep playing with this library and making more little Flash games.

EDIT: Decided to share the source in case anyone wanted to see how it was built or build upon it. The FlashPunk source is all in there and the project is a FlashBuilder one, though I’m sure you could import it into FlexBuilder or build with any other compiling tools you want. SimpleGame.zip
