Indexing Xbox LIVE Community Games

April 6th, 2009 | 3 comments

I’ve got a new project to show you (to anyone not following me on Twitter, in #xna on IRC, or in the forums this will be new): http://xblcg.info

xblcg.info is a complete index of all games on Xbox LIVE Community Games. Using the RSS feed published by Microsoft we are able to get all sorts of data for each game like the developer, genre, description, and last date of update. We also create a short link to the Xbox.com Marketplace so that you can have an easy to remember link like http://xblcg.info/link/Bloc instead of some gigantic, GUID-infested URL.

The site updates it’s database every hour by reading the RSS feed, so it will always be relatively up to date (within an hour of the RSS feed changing we’ll have the new data). We’re hoping to continue expanding the service, but we feel this is quite an offering as is. It’s a fast and simple way to glance at everything in the store, as well as have some simple links to pass around the internet.

Where Has Nick Been?

  1. Nick, if you add a review or score aspect to this, you could create a very persuasive product. Yes, I know it’s a inordinate request, but it seems like there have been multiple sources lately commenting upon the failures of XBLCG vs iTunes apps; the primary bar being the lack of a feedback mechanism. Of course there’s the chance the MS could be implementing something like this. It doesn’t seem like an unwieldy addition for purchasers to be able to choose from a series of stars… but maybe they’re not and you could be that guy. *shrugs*

  2. Hey Nick,

I want to thank you for your excellent tutorials. I am a developer in the business world but have always wanted to write games. XNA has been a great method for me to breach that direction and i have found your tutorials spot on in my attempts at moving that way.

Is there any possibility that you’d do a series of tutorials on how to create our own 2D scroller? Specifically, an action, beat-’em-up type. Similar to The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai. That game inspired me greatly, and it would be great to have some tutorials from you covering the basics for that particular type of gaming genre.
