Existence Progress

Here we are just a few days after the start of Existence and I have a pretty good start. Animated sprites, full tile map with collisions, and some fun floating sprites (those music notes you see in the screen shot bob up and down). Next up on my list of things to do is tweak my camera system and get started on a level editor. Hopefully I’ll have that done by the end of the week so I can show a level of running through a level. (The screen above is generated as a random level which is how I’ve been testing thus far).
I’ve also decided to just call the game Existence. I decided that I don’t have enough in common with Being to justify calling this Being 2. I’m not using the former main character, the former bad guy, nor even keeping the gameplay the same. About the only relationship is the sprite sets and playful, non-violent nature of the game.
That’s about it for now. I’ll probably do blogs, videos, and screen shots during the life of Existence to keep people interested and also because I don’t do those sorts of things for Metacreature Games titles. It’s always fun to talk about and show off projects.

Hi Nick
I’m affraid I’m completely off-topic, but I failed to see any contact form, and the email you gave on the metacreatures website doesn’t work.
I made a small entry for DBP (arkx), and I used several soundtrack you composed (http://gravelyn.com/filo).
Now I’m thinking to polish/submit my entry as a community game, and wanted to make sure everything was ok for the resources I used.
Anyway, I found your blog, and am quite impressed you are a coder more than a music composer! (being a coder myself, I can hardly do anything else). And it seems we were challengers for the DBP.
So if it is ok, I’ll keep using your soundtracks, and of course give you the credit for this. When I’ll be ready to submit (by feb 2009), I could also send you the windows version if you want.
I wish you all the best for Metacreatures games, and am looking forward to reading from you soon.
Regards,
Raph
ps: the site for the DBP version of my entry is here: http://gruaz.net/arkx, but the “polished” version should be a bit different.
Sounds good. All that music is under Creative Commons 3.0, so yep, you can use whatever you want for whatever you want as long as you give me credit for making it. Glad you found it useful in your game and I can’t wait to see something with my music go up on Community Games.
Best of luck getting it polished up and submitted.
Thanks! I’ll keep you informed.
Hey Nick!
How do you start making a game like this?
I’m currently going through your 2D Tile Based Tutorials, and I’m wondering if you’re planning to do a similar Tutorial Series for Sidescrollers like your Existence Game.
If there is already a resource out there that is as comprehensive as your Tile Series for making SideScrollers then do let me know and post that.
If you hadn’t thought of doing a series on Sidescrollers then I’d definitely encourage you to give it some thought. You seem to think like a regular coder and your approach is more down to earth and easier to understand.
Thanks for all the hard work on your tutorials by the way!
